The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is embarking on a nationwide crackdown on the importation and use of polythene bags.

The Undersecretary in the Ministry, Joseph Africano Bartel says ministry officials in collaboration with Juba City Council and law enforcement officers will move to enforce the ban on the plastic bags that was announced by the Ministry last year.

Bartel says those found in violation will face the law.

The launch of the operation coincides with the commemoration of World Environment Day today, a day to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

The global theme for this year’s celebrations is “Air Pollution.”

In line with the day, the Undersecretary says it is the responsibility of every citizen to protect their surroundings.
