President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar have agreed to the establishment of a Trust Fund to manage financing for the peace process.

In their meeting in Juba yesterday, the two Principals said the ‘Peace Support Fund’ would provide independent oversight and ensure greater accountability for resources during the Pre-Transitional and Transitional periods.

On the issue of the number of states, President Kiir and Dr. Machar resolved to wait for the outcome of an initiative by IGAD mediators and South Africa’s Deputy President David Mabuza.

The United Nations has offered to help manage the Trust Fund. In a briefing to the UN Security Council via video link yesterday, UN Special Representative David Shearer welcomed the initiative as a much-needed development that would build confidence and ensure accountability.
