BREAKING NEWS: South Sudan vice president Hussein Abdelbagi Akol tested positive for coronavirus.

South Sudan vice-president and chairperson of the National Taskforce on coronavirus, Hussein Abdel-Baggi, has tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

A senior government official told South Sudan News Now (SSNN) this evening that Abdelbaggi was among 188 people – all of whom are South Sudanese – who tested positive for the virus today.

“The Vice President and the chairman of the taskforce has tested positive for the coronavirus. He is among the 188 people who tested positive for the virus today,” the senior government official said on condition of anonymity from the capital Juba.

The latest development came almost two weeks after the country’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny who was at the time the deputy chair of the taskforce said he and his wife Angelina Teny (who is also the defense minister) were tested positive for the deadly virus.

Machar and his wife along the minister of information Michael Makuei are the only senior government officials to test positive for the deadly virus.

South Sudan’s coronavirus cases today surpassed the 1000 line after 188 people tested positive for the virus bringing the total number of those with the virus to 1004.
